My Take
Dónal Lunny is, to me, one of the most quietly influential figures in modern music. Founding Planxty, The Bothy Band and Moving Hearts, and wielding guitar, bouzouki, keyboards and bodhrán with equal ease, he didn't just preserve Irish traditional music, he reinvented it for the modern ear. His Trinity College honorary doctorate feels earned. What I admire most is the producer's instinct: knowing how to make ancient melodies breathe in contemporary arrangements. Five decades at the forefront of a national tradition is staggering, and his fingerprints are all over the music I love.
