Hanako Yamada

I have such a soft spot for Hanako Yamada, the kind of Osaka comedian whose face alone makes you exhale and grin before she's even said a word. Born and raised in Osaka, barely 150 centimeters tall, she built a whole career out of refusing to play pretty or cool, turning herself into the punchline with a fearlessness I find genuinely brave, because that's a brutal way to earn a laugh and she's done it for decades. Forget flashy awards or one signature role. Her gift is just walking in and making the whole room feel a few degrees warmer, and honestly that's the rarest thing in comedy.
