Donald Fagen

Fagen is, for me, the patron saint of meticulous music. As the voice and keyboard at the heart of Steely Dan, he fused jazz harmony with rock's edge and wrapped it in wry, literate lyrics that reward repeated listening. The Nightfly remains one of my favorite solo records, immaculate yet emotionally alive. You recognize a Fagen track in a single bar, and that unmistakable signature, sophisticated and a little sardonic, is exactly why I keep returning to it.
