Douglas Carswell

What strikes me about Douglas Carswell is his refusal to stay comfortable. Plenty of politicians cling to a safe seat; he kept upending things, switching parties and helping drive Vote Leave before reinventing himself entirely as a think-tank chief in Mississippi. You may disagree with his politics, but the through-line is genuine conviction rather than careerism. I find his second act especially intriguing: a British ex-MP betting his reputation on American policy work is an unusual leap. Whatever one's verdict on Brexit, Carswell reads to me as a man who follows ideas wherever they lead, and that consistency commands a certain respect.
