My Take

What I admire about Edie Brickell is how she broke through on her own terms. Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars hitting No. 4 in 1988 with the New Bohemians is one of those debuts that feels effortless but clearly wasn't, and her loose, conversational phrasing still sounds fresh to me. I find it telling that someone who came up through Dallas's Booker T. Washington arts high school never fully chased the spotlight. Being married to Paul Simon could easily overshadow an artist, but to me her voice has always stood on its own. I'd love to hear her keep writing.
