My Take

Edward Elgar moves me more than his most famous tune suggests. Everyone knows Pomp and Circumstance from graduations, but reduce him to that and you miss the man entirely. In the Enigma Variations, Salut d'Amour, and The Dream of Gerontius I hear grandeur shadowed by a peculiarly English melancholy, a wistfulness beneath the ceremony. I'm also drawn to his story: a largely self-taught provincial who rose to become his nation's defining composer, ultimately a knighted baronet laden with honors. Yet for all the medals, what lingers is the loneliness in the music. Elgar could make triumph sound quietly sad, and that's genius.
