My Take

Puccini is, for my money, the most emotionally manipulative composer in the best possible way. Born into a long line of musicians in Lucca, he inherited a craft and then perfected the art of the unforgettable melody. La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly: each can grab you by the throat in a single phrase. I'm especially moved by Butterfly's tragedy set in Japan, the ache of cultural collision rendered in pure sound. That he died in 1924 leaving Turandot unfinished only adds to the mystique. A century later his sorrowful beauty hasn't faded one bit, which is the truest test of greatness.
