Ellar Coltrane

Ellar Coltrane will always be linked, in my mind, to Boyhood, and rightly so. Filmed over twelve years, that project captured a boy literally becoming a man on screen, and Coltrane lived that transformation in real time. What strikes me is how rare his experience is: his own life and his character grew up together, blurring the line between performance and lived record. The Critics' Choice award he earned feels well deserved. I see him as an actor who carries a genuinely singular piece of film history, and I find that quietly remarkable, whatever he chooses to do next.
