Emeli Sandé

Emeli Sandé has a voice that disarms me every time. Born in Sunderland and raised in Aberdeenshire, she trained toward medicine at the University of Glasgow before music pulled her in, and you can hear that thoughtfulness in everything she writes. Her performances at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics announced a major talent. A Brit Award winner and an MBE, she still sings with sincerity rather than showmanship. What I value about her is durability; she writes songs built to outlast trends, and that is rarer than chart success in any era.
