My Take

Petit is one of those players I respect more in hindsight than I did at the time. The blond ponytail made him look flashy, but his game was all intelligence and balance, the quiet engine behind Arsenal's golden midfield and France's 1998 triumph. Scoring in that World Cup final, then being named a Knight of the Legion of Honour, tells you how much the nation valued him. He drifted through Barcelona and Chelsea without quite the same impact, yet that almost makes me appreciate the Arsenal-Monaco peak more. A craftsman's footballer, and I have always preferred those to the showmen.
