Esperanza Spalding

Esperanza Spalding is the kind of musician who makes you reconsider what "impressive" even means. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, taught herself violin as a kid, picked up the bass, and by her early twenties was on the faculty at Berklee College of Music — the same school that later gave her an honorary doctorate. Then in 2011 she won the Grammy for Best New Artist over Justin Bieber, which sent the internet into a meltdown but honestly made perfect sense if you'd ever seen her perform: standing at a towering upright bass, singing in a warm, effortless alto while her fingers walk complex chord changes, and making it all look like a casual Tuesday. Her albums keep shifting — jazz, R&B, classical-influenced chamber pop — and she never lets herself get pinned down. Five Grammys total, and still the most interesting person in the room.
