My Take

Evan Rachel Wood strikes me as one of the rare child actors who grew into a more interesting performer, not a safer one. From her early television work through her breakout teenage roles, she has consistently chosen characters who live close to some emotional edge, and as an adult she took on parts demanding both icy precision and sudden vulnerability. The Emmy and Golden Globe nominations matter less to me than her willingness to keep risking discomfort, on screen and off. Add a genuine singing career and you have an artist who refuses to be just one thing. I respect that stubbornness.
