My Take

Fran Walsh is proof that the people shaping a film aren't always the ones at the podium. As Peter Jackson's writing partner since Meet the Feebles and producer across the Lord of the Rings trilogy, she's been central to one of cinema's biggest achievements, and her three Academy Awards for The Return of the King back that up. I admire that she works largely out of the spotlight, from Wellington rather than Hollywood. The BAFTAs and that Golden Globe for best song hint at how broad her contribution runs, from script to score. Dame Frances earned every bit of that recognition behind the scenes.

Dame Frances Rosemary Walsh (born 10 January 1959) is a New Zealand screenwriter and film producer. The partner of filmmaker Peter Jackson, Walsh has contributed to all of their films since 1989: as co-writer since Meet the Feebles, and as producer since The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. She won three Academy Awards for the final film of the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
