My Take
Frances McDormand is, for my money, the most trustworthy actor alive. When she appears on screen I stop seeing technique and start believing a person exists — Marge Gunderson's decency, Mildred Hayes's fury, all rendered without vanity or any pleading for sympathy. Her Triple Crown of Acting is well documented, but what I admire most is her refusal to soften herself for the industry: no cosmetic illusions, no apologetic charm, just craft. She has turned plainness into a kind of radical glamour, and in doing so widened what a leading woman is allowed to be. Few careers feel this principled.
