Fuwa-chan

Fuwa-chan is one of those performers I had to watch twice before I understood her. Born in Hachioji, Tokyo in 1993, a Toyo University graduate, she built her name on YouTube before Japanese television handed her a seat at almost every variety show table. Her whole register is volume and bluntness, delivered at a distance most Japanese TV etiquette would call too close. It reads as chaos, but chaos that precise is a craft. What convinces me, though, is where she is now: signed to World Wonder Ring Stardom as a professional wrestler. Comedians step into rings all the time as a stunt. Being listed on the roster is a different commitment entirely — bruises, training, and an audience that will not applaud you for effort alone. Choosing physical risk after a public career has already taken its hits strikes me as the least cynical thing a famous person can do.
