Gamon Kaai

Gamon Kaai was born in 1975 in Warabi, Saitama, and has spent his career carrying a small, permanent inconvenience: his surname is written so that almost everyone reads it as Kawai rather than Kaai. He became known young as an actor, has worked as a television personality, and also plays drums. That last detail is the one that interests me. Japanese entertainment is full of people who arrived early, burned brightly through their twenties, and then had nothing to fall back on when the casting calls thinned out. Kaai built a second discipline instead, and drumming is about as far from screen acting as you can get. One is reactive and interior, the other is physical, metronomic and unforgiving of hesitation. He also operates through his own company, which suggests someone who decided fairly early that he would rather manage his own longevity than wait to be managed. Versatile is the easy word for him. Durable is the more accurate one.
