My Take
Gary Herbert strikes me as the consummate slow-build politician. A real estate agent who served fourteen years on the Utah County Commission before rising to become Utah's seventeenth governor from 2009 to 2021, he embodies patience over flash. Chairing the National Governors Association signals the kind of cross-aisle competence that rarely makes headlines but keeps a state running. I have a soft spot for the steady operator, the BYU-educated local who climbs by earning trust rather than chasing it, and Herbert's long tenure is itself the strongest testimony to his character. Durability in office is underrated, and he had it in abundance.
