Gigi Riva

Riva moves me more than almost any footballer of his era. That thunderous left foot, the composure in front of goal, and above all the loyalty to little Cagliari, whom he dragged to a scudetto, make him a genuine folk hero rather than a mere statistic. He turned down bigger clubs to stay, and that choice tells you everything about the man. His death in 2024 felt like Sardinia losing a patron saint. We will not see that kind of devotion often.
