Joey Ryan

Ryan is a perfect emblem of independent wrestling's DIY spirit. Rather than wait for a major company to anoint him, he co-founded Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and helped turn Southern California into a destination scene, holding its top singles and tag titles along the way. I'm drawn to performers who build the stage they want to stand on, and that's exactly what he did, later branching into acting, writing, and promoting. The mainstream may not have crowned him, but he created lasting infrastructure for the art form. In wrestling, owning your own platform is its own kind of championship.
