Gillian Keegan

What strikes me most about Gillian Keegan is the trajectory: from a 16-year-old factory apprentice in Kirkby and a degree at Liverpool John Moores University to running the country's entire education system as Secretary of State. That is not the usual Westminster pedigree, and I think it matters. Her earlier work on apprenticeships and skills suggests someone who understands education as a practical ladder, not just an abstract policy file. Whatever one makes of the politics, I respect a politician who can speak about opportunity from lived experience rather than theory. She is, to me, a genuinely self-made figure in British public life.
