Girolamo Panzetta

Girolamo Panzetta was born in 1962 in Villanova del Battista, in Italy's province of Avellino, and built an entire career in Japan. He belongs to a category Japanese television calls gaikokujin tarento — foreign personalities who become fixtures on domestic broadcasting — but he outgrew the usual limits of that role. The standard version of that job is narrow: show up, be charmingly foreign, get gently teased about your accent, disappear. Panzetta instead studied at Meikai University, became a television presenter and actor, wrote several books and essays, and turned himself into Japan's reference point for Italian menswear through years of fashion magazine work. There is also a detail I find perfectly, almost too neatly cast: he voiced Luigi, the Italian car, in the Japanese dub of Cars. Sustaining decades of visibility in a foreign media industry is not a matter of charm alone. It requires reading a room in a second language, over and over, for years — which is a far harder skill than it looks from the outside.
