My Take

I love that this is a woman barely 146cm tall who spent years being one of the most terrifying competitors on the planet. Ryoko Tani fighting in the 48kg extra-lightweight class always cracked me up in the best way, because she looked like the gentle neighbor you'd ask to water your plants, right up until she stepped on the tatami and turned into pure quiet menace. Two Olympic golds, a stack of world titles, the whole "Yawara-chan" legend, and yet what gets me is that flat, unbothered calm she carried whether she won or lost. Then she just casually pivots into politics, because of course she does, because that competitive engine never switches off. Tiny frame, steel core. I find that contrast endlessly charming.
