Rolly Teranishi

Every time ROLLY turns up on screen I just grin, because the guy is a full-blooded rock star in a country that doesn't always make room for them. He's Kyoto-born and Takatsuki-raised, which somehow makes the whole glam-rock thing funnier and cooler at once: the makeup, the kohl-rimmed eyes, the wild costumes, the showman's pout, all of it lifted straight from Bowie-era Britain and worn with total conviction. Sure, variety TV likes to cast him as the lovable eccentric uncle, but the second he straps on a guitar that flips, and his playing does the talking. What I love most is that he never softens his aesthetic to fit in. There's real music sitting dead-center of all that flash, and that combination of theater and genuine chops is rarer than people admit. He's a one-of-one, and I'm always glad he's around.
