Gorō Inagaki

In a five-man group of superstars, someone ends up being the quiet one, and in SMAP that was Goro Inagaki. In 2001 he was arrested on the spot for obstructing a police officer during a parking stop, a case that ended without indictment. He never worked by volume or by punchline; his register was books, film and the stage, discussed in his own words rather than a producer's. Born in Tokyo in 1973 and a Horikoshi High School graduate, he spent decades inside the biggest pop act Japan has produced, and when it dissolved he did not retreat into nostalgia. In 2017 he started again with Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and Shingo Katori as Atarashii Chizu, rebuilding a name from scratch in his forties, which is a genuinely frightening thing to choose. He kept acting and kept singing. That reads to me like someone who actually loves the work.
