Kenji Murakami

I have a real soft spot for Kenji Murakami, because he's a comedian who somehow carries himself like a quiet poetry teacher who wandered onto the wrong set. Born in 1980 out in Ushiku, Ibaraki, he never struck me as the loud, arms-flailing type chasing laughs; he's the guy who drops one understated line, lets it hang in the air, and watches it slowly land. There's a gentleness to him, a patience in how he picks his words, that feels almost out of step with the usual comedy hustle, and I love it for that. Scroll his Instagram or X and you sense someone genuinely paying attention to small everyday things. Not flashy, but he gets the texture of language and the turn of the seasons. To me, that's a quietly classy kind of funny.
