My Take

Greg Lake is one of those rare progressive rock figures who never let virtuosity crowd out warmth. Anchoring King Crimson's debut and then ELP, he could have hidden behind sheer technique, yet what stays with me is his singing voice and that tender melody of "Lucky Man," written when he was just twelve. He proved a bassist could also be a band's emotional center. Coming from seaside Poole, there's an unhurried humanity in everything he recorded. His 2016 passing closed a chapter, but his rich low end and calm vocals still feel like a hand on your shoulder.
