My Take
What strikes me about Gretchen Whitmer is how thoroughly she is a product of Michigan. Born in Lansing and raised in Grand Rapids, she climbed the unglamorous ladder from lawyer to prosecutor to state legislature before reaching the governorship. I tend to trust politicians who rose locally rather than parachuting in, and her 2021 Profile in Courage Award and Hall of Fame induction suggest someone willing to take real risks rather than play it safe. I find that grounded, hometown loyalty genuinely appealing, and I am curious to watch where her plainspoken brand of resolve carries her next.
