My Take

Grimes fascinates me because she collapsed the entire studio into a single person before that was fashionable. Writing, producing, singing, and directing her own videos, the Vancouver-born artist turned bedroom production into a Juno-winning art form and dragged pop's future a few years closer. The tabloid chapters of her life tend to swallow the conversation, but I keep returning to the work itself: meticulous, strange, melodic, unafraid to alienate. She is one of the few artists whose missteps interest me as much as her triumphs, because both spring from the same restless refusal to repeat herself. That, to me, is the mark of a real artist.
