My Take

Hannah Chaplin is a figure I think about more as a story than a star. A music hall performer from the age of sixteen, billed as Lily Harley, whose own career on the London stage faded into hardship and illness. Yet her shadow is enormous, because she raised Charlie Chaplin and Sydney, and you can feel her influence in Charlie's gift for pantomime and tenderness. I find it moving that someone whose name most people do not know shaped one of cinema's defining sensibilities. Born in 1865, gone by 1928, she lived a hard life that quietly seeded something immortal.
