My Take

Anton Chekhov is one of the writers I return to most, and I never tire of the fact that he practiced medicine while reshaping modern drama. The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, The Seagull, almost nothing happens in them and yet the ache of ordinary lives lands like a quiet blow. I think his physician's eye is the secret: he observes people without judgment, then warms the clinical gaze with deep compassion. That he did all this before dying at forty-four still astonishes me. For me, no one captures the dignity of disappointment quite the way Chekhov does.

Overview

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (; Russian: Антон Павлович Чехов; 29 January [O.S. 17 January] 1860 – 15 July [O.S. 2 July] 1904) was a Russian playwright and short story writer. Widely considered one of the greatest writers of all time, his career as a playwright produced four classics, and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics.
