My Take

Harmony Korine is one of those filmmakers who makes you feel vaguely uncomfortable in the best possible way. He burst onto the scene writing Kids at just 19, and that raw, unfiltered energy never really left him — you can trace a straight line from that script to Gummo's chaotic rural bleakness, through Julien Donkey-Boy and all the way to Spring Breakers, which somehow made a neon-soaked crime fantasy starring Disney Channel girls into one of the most weirdly hypnotic films of the 2010s. He's not interested in conventional storytelling, and that's exactly the point. Whether you find his work profound or insufferable probably says something about your tolerance for intentional disorder, but either way, nobody else makes movies that look or feel quite like his. That's worth something.
