Hayato Daieishō

Daieishō is the kind of sumo wrestler who never made it easy on himself. He entered the professional ranks in 2012 at eighteen and climbed into the top makuuchi division by September 2015 — fast, but by grinding rather than by hype. At 183 cm he is not one of the mountainous figures the sport is famous for, and that shapes everything about how he fights. A wrestler that size cannot simply absorb a charge and win on mass; he has to be quicker off the line and more precise with his footwork, every single day, for fifteen days in a row. Reaching sekiwake, one of the named ranks just below the top, is the proof that the work held up. What I find compelling is how unglamorous the story is. There is no manufactured rivalry — just a man from Saitama who kept showing up, won the top-division championship in January 2021 as the first wrestler from his prefecture to do so, and kept beating people who outweighed him. Sumo needs its giants, but it is sustained by wrestlers like this.
