My Take
Helen Slater will forever hold a special place in my heart as the original live-action Supergirl — and honestly, the 1984 film gets more unfairly dismissed than it deserves. She brought a genuine sweetness and wide-eyed sincerity to Kara Zor-El at a time when superhero movies had zero template to follow, and she pulled it off with real charm. What I find even more interesting is how her career resisted easy categorization: she followed Supergirl with the scrappy cult favorite The Legend of Billie Jean, held her own in the comedy Ruthless People, and showed real comedic timing in City Slickers. And then there's the songwriter side of her — she graduated from Manhattan's High School of Performing Arts and has released albums on which she sings and plays piano, which tells you creativity was always her foundation. The DC universe eventually welcomed her back through the Supergirl TV series, which felt like a lovely full-circle moment.
