My Take

Henry Joost intrigues me as a filmmaker who keeps pulling at the same thread: how images manipulate our sense of what is real. With his longtime partner Ariel Schulman he broke through on the documentary Catfish, then carried that unease into the Paranormal Activity sequels, the screen-driven thriller Nerve, and Project Power. He moves fluidly across directing, writing, editing and producing, but the constant is his instinct for tension and audience psychology. I find creative duos compelling, and theirs has lasted across very different genres. That he is married to actress Sofia Black-D'Elia adds a nice sense of a life built inside the work.
