Herb Dean

Herb Dean earns a particular kind of respect from me. As a former fighter turned referee for the UFC and ONE, he reads danger from the inside, which is exactly why he is so trusted. Officiating is a thankless craft: stop a fight a second too early or too late and the whole world second-guesses you. To be called the gold standard in that role means he has mastered split-second judgment with lives on the line. The spotlight belongs to the athletes, but unsung guardians like him are why the sport can exist at all.
