Hidenori Tokuyama

If you have spent any time with Japanese tokusatsu, Hidenori Tokuyama is a name that carries real weight. Raised in Tokyo's Suginami ward after being born in Nakano in 1982 and a Horikoshi High School graduate, he started as a child actor and never really left the industry. His best-known role is Sou Yaguruma in Kamen Rider Kabuto — a character who transforms as Kamen Rider TheBee and later KickHopper, and who takes one of the strangest, most committed arcs in the franchise. That kind of role can easily collapse into camp. It did not, and the reason is the actor. He also played Hiroto Sutou, Go-on Gold, in Engine Sentai Go-onger, which makes him one of the relatively few performers to leave a lasting mark in both the Rider and Sentai worlds. What I find genuinely appealing is that he is a tokusatsu fan himself. There is a particular intensity to someone working inside a genre they loved before they were paid to be in it, and you can feel it. He works as a singer too, which says something about the range he has kept alive across two decades.
