My Take

Hideshi Hino is, to me, one of horror's true originals. Born in Manchuria in 1946, he channels something almost primal into work like Panorama of Hell and his Hino Horrors, where the grotesque becomes a sincere meditation on life, death, and decay rather than cheap shock. His wet, lurid linework is instantly his own. That he also directed entries in the notorious Guinea Pig film series shows an artist unafraid of any medium that lets him stare straight at what others flinch from. I deeply respect creators who make the repellent strangely beautiful, and Hino does it like no one else.
