Hilary Hahn

Hilary Hahn is, to me, the ideal advocate for classical music in the present tense. A three-time Grammy winner with flawless technique, she could coast on the standard repertoire forever, yet she actively commissions new concerti and partitas, dragging the violin firmly into the now. That commitment to living composers is what earns my respect more than any award. Her social handle, violincase, hints at a warmth and humor that cut through the genre's stiffness. The purity of her tone feels inseparable from that integrity. She makes a centuries-old instrument feel urgent and welcoming, and few players manage both.
