Hirofumi Yanagase

Politicians usually feel like they're broadcasting from some distant planet, but Hirofumi Yanagase reads differently to me, and I think it's because he climbed up the unglamorous way, grinding it out as a secretary before stepping into the spotlight himself. Sure, the resume looks gilded on paper, born in Ota Ward in 1974, Kaijo High School then Waseda, the textbook smart-kid pipeline, yet what comes through isn't aloof elite polish but the dust-on-your-shoes practicality of someone who actually worked the back rooms. That's the part I find quietly likable. He worked as a secretary to Renhō, rose through the Ōta ward and Tokyo assemblies, and served one term in the House of Councillors for Nippon Ishin no Kai until 2025. Honestly, it's usually these behind-the-scenes guys, the ones who know how the machine really runs, who end up nudging the world along.
