My Take
Honestly, the first thing that grabbed me about Hiroki Kondo is the height — 186 centimeters is legitimately imposing, and for a baseball player that kind of frame just commands the field in a way you can't manufacture. He's a Hiroshima kid, born and raised in the city most synonymous with the Carp, so you have to figure baseball was basically in the air he breathed growing up. What I find quietly compelling is the path he took: Okayama Shoka University isn't a flashy school, yet Rakuten took him in the first round of the 2017 draft, which tells me this guy earned his spot through grind rather than pedigree. His pro career ran from Rakuten to Yakult through 2024, and something about the understated Hiroshima-raised, university-grind background makes me want to root for him.
