My Take
Hitonari Tsuji's list of occupations makes me stop and read it twice: poet, novelist, film director, screenwriter, singer-songwriter. Any one of those is a full life. He took the Akutagawa Prize in 1996 and the Prix Femina etranger in 1999, meaning he satisfied the Japanese literary establishment and French readers within three years of each other. That is not a common trick. For his music he switches the reading of his own name to Jinsei, a small formality I find oddly charming. His work has been translated into around twenty languages and has sold over ten million copies. This is not a dabbler spreading himself thin; it is someone going all in, in every direction at once.
