My Take

Holly Black is, to me, one of the most quietly important voices in modern fantasy. The Spiderwick Chronicles and her Andre Norton Award are deserved, but what I admire most is her refusal to sand down the genre's sharp edges. Her faeries keep the cruelty and danger of real folklore rather than the cute, declawed version. Writing for young readers without condescending to them is genuinely hard, and she nails it; her Folk of the Air series shows her range deepening even further. I think the willingness to let real shadow into a children's book is exactly what makes her work stick with adults too.
