Hunter Hayes

Hunter Hayes earns my respect through sheer musicianship. A Louisiana native fluent in more than thirty instruments, he is the rare artist who can build a record almost entirely himself, and you can feel that hands-on intimacy in every track. His 2011 debut hitting number seven on the Billboard 200 and topping the country chart, selling over a million copies, was no fluke. What impresses me is that his virtuosity never overwhelms the song; the melodies stay warm and human. I read his Louisiana roots in that generous, big-hearted sound, and I think his craft deserves far more recognition than it gets.
