My Take
Idina Menzel possesses the rare voice that feels like an event. I trace a straight line from Maureen in Rent through Elphaba in Wicked—and that 2004 Tony—to Elsa in Frozen, and what strikes me is the consistency: every signature role is about a woman refusing to shrink. Defying Gravity and Let It Go are practically the same anthem a decade apart, and she delivered both with a belt that makes arenas feel intimate. The Disney Legend and National Medal of Arts honors are deserved, but her real legacy is generational: millions of children learned what a Broadway voice sounds like through her. Few performers bridge stage and screen so completely.
