My Take

Honestly, Iggy Pop might be the most purely alive human being rock and roll has ever produced. The guy grew up in a trailer park in Michigan, dropped out of the University of Michigan to go scream at people for a living, and somehow became the Godfather of Punk — a title that fits him better than any suit ever could. I love that the Stooges were largely ignored and broke up in chaos, yet half of what came after them — from the Ramones to Nirvana to every band that ever rolled around in broken glass — owes Iggy a serious debt. The shirtless stage-diving, the peanut butter, the collaborations with David Bowie in Berlin, the decades of addiction and survival and comeback — it's a life that should not have lasted this long, and yet here he is, still sharp-eyed and raspy-voiced. France gave him their arts medal. That's the funniest and most correct thing the world has ever done.
