My Take

I think of Abrams as Hollywood's great resuscitator. Hand him a franchise on life support, whether Star Trek or Star Wars, and he will find its pulse again. His mystery box philosophy gets mocked for promising more than it delivers, and fairly so, but I would argue the promise itself is the art: nobody builds anticipation like he does. What I admire most is that beneath the lens flares there is a writer's instinct, honed on Lost and his early scripts, for characters you care about within ten minutes. He may not always stick the landing, but the takeoff is consistently thrilling, and that is a rarer gift than people admit.
