My Take
Jada Pinkett Smith has spent three decades refusing to be just one thing, and that is exactly what I find compelling about her. The acting résumé alone would satisfy most careers — Ali, Collateral, the Matrix films, scene-stealing voice work in Madagascar — but her most radical act may be Red Table Talk, where she turned family vulnerability into a new kind of television and won a Daytime Emmy for it. Plenty of stars curate an image; she dismantles hers in public, repeatedly, on purpose. I do not always agree with her choices, but I never doubt her nerve, and the Time 100 nod in 2021 felt entirely logical to me.
