My Take

James Thompson is a proper journeyman heavyweight of his era, and I mean that as a compliment. The big man from Rochdale fought everywhere that mattered in mixed martial arts, PRIDE, EliteXC, DREAM, Bellator, Rizin, taking on the division's monsters without flinching. He will forever be linked to that infamous cauliflower ear bout with Kimbo Slice, but reducing him to one viral moment misses the point. Few fighters were as willing to walk into the fire against anyone, anywhere. That kind of durability and nerve over a long career, from 2003 onward, earns my respect more than any title would.
