Jared Hess

Jared Hess appeals to me through his unmistakable brand of deadpan, gently absurd comedy. As a writer, director, producer, and actor, he renders awkward, offbeat characters with real tenderness rather than mockery. The worlds he builds feel rooted in some strange, timeless small town that you can't quite place on a map, and that elusiveness is exactly what makes them stick. I sense a deep affection beneath the quirk, a refusal to laugh down at his oddballs. In an era of loud humor, his quiet, idiosyncratic touch quietly commands my admiration as a stylist.
