My Take
Jay Chou earns his title as the King of Mandopop, and what astonishes me is how complete an artist he is. He does not merely sing; he writes, composes, produces and directs, controlling the whole creative chain. From his self-titled 2000 debut he did not follow trends so much as redefine the sound of an era, and being repeatedly named among Asia's most influential figures confirms his reach across the entire Chinese-speaking world. The Tamkang High School music kid grew into a one-man empire. I admire creators who set the tide rather than ride it, and even without understanding every lyric, I find his melodies impossible to resist.
